If the next election came down to Obama vs. Palin, who would you vote for?

Palin and Huckabee are two viable GOP candidates that, if nominated, could actually get me to vote for Obama. However, I think (and really hope) the GOP is not quite dumb enough to elect either of them.

The Dems were dumb enough to pick John Kerry against G Dubs the 2nd time around. Pretty amazing how badly they fucked that up. They just needed a likable personality to win. The GOP needs a hard-nosed fact-telling no-bull shit candidate to bury Obama.

UB I had a lot of respect for you. I thought we saw eye-to-eye, you must know that as President, Obama brings ignorance with the power to enforce ignorance and poverty whereas Palin brings ignorance without the power but with the backing of less ignorant people...

The GOP seems to ONLY be hopping on the "no government control" bandwagon because it was popular and there are a bunch of conservative, white bred religious folk who have been brainwashed to believe Obama is a socialist through and through. Less big government, does it only bother you when the government is so involved with financial control? Who signed and brought in the Patriot Act? That's not government interference?
Palin is a fucking retard and whether or not she has smart people behind her or not (I personally did not think GWB was very intelligent on Presidential standards or likable but definitely had smart people working behind him) she's going to make our country look terrible. She's already doing a pretty good job of promoting ignorance of the actual political situation in our country. Point being, i'd consider voting for a GOP candidate, but not if it's Palin and not if they're faux-teabaggers. |

Like I said; I don't give a fuck "why," I give a fuck "that" things like punitive taxing on banks for, and I shit you not, making too much money, ends at any and all costs.
I don't like the Patriot Act in principle, but I said government control of the economy, which it isn't really related to. I don't really care what our country looks like to a bunch of frankly unimportant people; smart people realize money talks and Obama is just bad for money; both in policy and in perception. There is a reason the markets go down whenever he talks, that reason is he is simply wrong. |

I think GWB was getting at this in another thread, but i'm honestly not very knowledgeable about the economy and be the first to admit it. What is fucked right now, exactly, and how would you (if you were in the position of the presidency) do to get us out of it? (I assume the national debt is the most pressing issue, but I just assume that because of it's astronomical number)

I get what Beebs and DJFC are saying, and maybe they're right. But If I had to choose between voting for Sarah Palin and shooting myself in the knee cap, I'd have to think long and hard about it.

In terms of what to do, basically the less the better; that is simplification of course. The reason why London is the new New York is down to government regulation; the mayor joked that they were going to build a statue of Sarbanes and Oxley because that law drove so much money out of the US and into London. While Sarbanes Oxley isn't entirely a bad idea, I'm just using it to illustrate a point. Specific issues like large increases on taxes on banks, regardless of their situation with regards to the bailouts is both a terrible idea and reactionary pandering to stupid people, which so many wannabe intelligentsia on the left claim to be above. Increasing the dividend tax is another specific example of more bad policy that panders to the stupid; "oh, those rich fat cats with their stocks should pay their share!" seems to be the general attitude for stupid people these days, ignoring the fact that the top 5% of tax payers already pay more than everybody else combined and the fact that those are the people who create growth in the economy. Higher taxes in general is bad enough, but increasing dividend taxes is particularly socialist (lulz look at the right wing nut job who spews out "socialism") in that dividend money is already taxed under corporate taxes; corporations take their profits after tax and some choose to pay out that money to their owners, stockholders, in the form of dividends, that money is then taxed again. Also throwing out such plainly anti free market ideas as restricting corporate pay and "banker" bonuses (even though it covers a lot more people than bankers) should be so abhorrent to anybody who believes that people have the basic right to spend their money as they see fit, that it makes you want to do anything in your power to make it stop. This general idea that anybody who makes money deserves to be punished is so disgusting, and Obama in particular is spreading it around to people who's emotions can be played like a violin because they don't know any better. In general the idea that people who make money somehow owe people who have done nothing to deserve it most (and I literally mean most as in more than 50%, well more in many cases) of their money, be it through paying for somebody's "free" health care or simply being taxed as punishment for working in the financial sector, is just against everything that makes society work. The specific policies are annoying enough, but just this general attitude of simultaneously leading a witch hunt and asking for even more of the witches money, as though it is your inalienable right to profit off of somebody else, is just so ridiculous. | |

Couldn't have said it better myself.
Except I would have said it with more anger. |

I'm just glad you're not above reactionary pandering.
