Texas high school basketball coach fired after beating opponent 100-0
Source For one Texas high school basketball coach even when you win, you lose. Micah Grimes, who made national headlines when his team beat up an undermanned opponent 100-0, was fired on Sunday. The firing of the girls varsity basketball coach comes after the Covenant School issued an official apology on its Web site following the Jan. 13 blowout of fellow Dallas-area private school, Dallas Academy. Grimes, who was in his fourth season at the school, disagreed with the school's apology and said his team played with "honor." "I respectfully disagree with the apology, especially the notion that the Covenant School girls basketball team should feel 'embarrassed' or 'ashamed,'" Grimes wrote in an e-mail posted on a youth basketball Web site on Sunday and published in The Dallas Morning News. "We played the game as it was meant to be played and would not intentionally run up the score on any opponent. Although a wide-margin victory is never evidence of compassion, my girls played with honor and integrity and showed respect to Dallas Academy." Kyle Queal, Covenant's headmaster, confirmed the firing to the Dallas Morning News, but said he could not say if the dismissal was a direct result of Grimes' disagreeing with the school. Queal signed the original statement along with board chair Todd Doshier. "The Covenant School, its board and administrators, regrets the incident of January 13 and the outcome of the game with the Dallas Academy Varsity Girls Basketball team. It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened. This clearly does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition." The Christian school also sought to forfeit the game saying "a victory without honor is a great loss." Covenant, a contender for the state championship last year, held a 59-0 lead at the half in the mid-January game. According to reports, Covenant continued to shoot 3-pointers and employ a full-court press defense into the fourth quarter. Dallas Academy, a school that specializes in teaching students with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia, has only eight players on its varsity squad and is winless over the last four seasons. Beating a team of retards 100 - 0: Badass or shameful? |

It should be mentioned that these aren't "retards" but just kids with short attention spans and dyslexia, so there's no reason that they would be at a disadvantage in basketball.
But still, running up the score is always shameful. |

I've been following this story since the result of the game became national news. The point guard had 48 points alone, stealing the ball from the other team's point guard over and over and making layups. After about 10 of these, I'd have put in all my back ups and their back ups for some playing time. It was obvious who was going to win, so why run it up?
As for the coach... well... they say school athletics isn't about winning, but sportsmanship. |

This is one thing that I have never been a fan of. In no way should the coach let the score get that out of hand. I have taken the press off after I get up 10, and pull all starters when up 15 at the level I used to coach at. You can always put your better players back in the game, but you never regain class. Classless act, and I'm happy he got canned.

Yeah this was a local thing here. Depends on who ask as to what really happened.
What does seem to be left out is that the rules disallow the constant running of the clock and there is no mercy rule. Also not sure why Academy is fielding a team let alone playing in this league. I heard they've not won in several years and not the first time they've failed to score. |

If the score was 99-0 it would have been shameful.
But 100-0 is awesome. Classless, I can kinda see that. But to fire a coach for being too good at his job? That's shameful. And if he's not that great a coach, then why the fuck is the other team even playing? |

I have been thinking about this a lot the last few days and I honestly think its a lose lose situation playing retards. If you run up the score you look classless, if you tell your team to play around on the court you look like you are a bunch of arrogant shits; you would basically be playing monkey in the middle with five retards at once until the shot clock runs down ... sure that would go over well too.

I couldn't agree more. I was sitting alone when I read the original post, and I actually started laughing. What really cracks me up is the fact that the score is a perfectly even "100-0". I agree with the assertion that there is no 100% correct answer for how the coach should have conducted himself. Sure, he could have asked his worst B-list players to dog it, but as someone already pointed out, that would have made him a condescending asshole. | |

Force the kids to pass 10 times before a shot. No fast break layups. Only half court Man to man for the remander of the game. Their are ways to keep a score low, without telling them to quit playing hard.
