Well, I come back from Thanksgiving break and everything is pretty much the same, except for 2 things. One, I now have clean laundry (irrelevant to most). Two, we are shut off from almost all downloading programs.

Ball State has just blocked Kazaa and mirc, which were not blocked before. I hear that Ares works, but I tried that and it didn't work. I also heard that Soul Seek works and am trying it right now.

If Soul Seek works, then that's great, but it is still no mirc or kazaa. With mirc, I was able to download entire CDs in 20 minutes or less and movies within a couple hours.

Now, does anyone know a way to get around this? Buckeye, you're a computer genius, any idea?

I think i've got a solution for you, ill post it at about midnight right now i'm at a computer lab doing some programming (I have HTTP tunneling programs on my computer in my room, and i dont know the links or which program is good/shitty off hand).

Goddamn i hate java, and while i'm at it fuck Solaris.

Okay to get around a firewall essentially what you need is a HTTP tunnler. What this does is switches the port number that a program would traditionally use (Ex. 2267) to a port that wont be blocked by a firewall like port TCP/UDP 80 or 21 (80 for web, 21 for File Transfer Protocol).

I've never had to use these before since Emule, Edonkey, and Overnet (if people are interested in this i can post links to them) have customizable port numbers, and even if they are firewalled they still work.

However i did look around for a few HTTP Tunneling programs and came up with these...

1) Hopster, it seems to work just fine, and is made specifically to work for Kazzaa, and MIRC, i'm also assuming it supports Kazaa Lite, if not you may have to make the switch. Try this out and let me know how it works. Also this is a freeware version so your bandwidth is increadibly fucking slow, and i cant find any serial number for it to work with.

2. Of all the programs i downloaded, Hopster was the only one made specifically for programs like Kazaa and MIRC. The other programs i got were either HTTP tunnelers for use by network adminstrators, or HTTP tunnelers to just transfer files and not intended for connection oriented programs. So basically as of now there is no #2, sorry.

That's what I thought to...but not to much. Emule won't connect to any server anymore...let alone try to download, no matter what port it's using. It doesn't even give me the "firewalled" message...it just says the server's full or not responding. Tried updating the serverlists from several sources...no help.

For those interested BSU parties, SoulSeek does work, it's no Kazaa, and certainly no mIRC, but it's better than nothing.

I just got hopster and it seems to work. It's slower than fuck, but since I only have dial up at my parent's house, I'm a little used to it.

We have a similar firewall problem at Butler. Blubster is a good program for downloading music that you can get at download.com. It is also extremely fast (i've clocked 600KB/sec here). It is able to get past the firewall while Kazaa cannot. Perhaps it will be able to get through Ball State's firewall as well

Its only $5 dollars to register it, so it may be worth your while to do so, that or find somewhere that has a crack for it. As of now i havnet been able to find shit for it, but maybe you'll have more luck than me. I remember reading that it takes about 45 mins to download a song and if registered it should take only 5.

Yeah, it says you get 50k/sec if you pay $5/month. Since it's a monthly fee, I'm thinking there's probably no crack. If it was a one-time fee, I'd probably do it, but $5/month isn't really worth it to me.

Alright i think i got two more solutions for you.

1)To set up your own proxy, i downloaded and installed Winproxy, and from what i can tell it should suit your needs just fine. It has options that allow for NAT, so that an outgoing connection coming in on the proxy server can be trasfered to a port number (like 21), and thus gettting through your firewall. However it looks a little complicated to use, as there was a 290 page pdf instruction manual that came with it. Its going to take some time to setup and it also recquires a host computer with 2 ethernet ports. One for connecting to the internet, and the other for the nework setup behind your proxy server, which means you'll also need a router/hub/switch behind the proxy server. Also i have no idea how you are going to be able to download this, as i got it off of emule, and that is currently blocked by your firewall. I could give it to you on cd over christmas, if you'd like.

2)Another program i found that is similar to hopster is bypass. I havent used it myself but it also looks like it supports kazaa, i have no idea what speeds it goes out, but it something for you to check out. Let me know how it goes.
