Default They Live

In 2002, I was a senior in high school and went to Panama City for my first real trip away from home by myself, where I had an amazing time with my friends.

During this trip, while drunk in the hotel room, we stumbled upon the movie They Live, which some of you may have seen or heard of. It's the movie the "cripple fight" from South Park was based on, and it has Rowdy Rod Piper and the "ass to ass" guy from Requiem for a Dream/Arbiter from Halo in it. It's directed by John Carpenter. Also a lot of the lines from this movie were used in Duke Nukem.

It is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It has an okay plot, but horrible acting, horrible special effects, and horrible writing. The basic premise is that aliens are controlling us through the TV, radio, and subliminal advertising and one man goes on a killing spree to try and stop them.

For 9 years, I watched this movie once every couple years for fun at how bad of a movie it was.

The other night, I was stoned out of my mind and watched it with a couple of friends in Arizona, when we, in our new state of mind, realized that it didn't seem like it was an alien invasion at all: It was a story about the main character (Rowdy Rod Piper), a homeless transient, going insane and on a killing rampage of innocent people. What if there are no aliens at all? No conspiracies; he's just imagining them? This changes the entire movie.

On one hand you have a terrible scifi/action film. On the other hand you have one of the most brilliant psychological masterpieces ever created. You have to constantly change your mind as to whose perspective is being shown, or whether or not he is hallucinating. The subtlety of the character's behavior is usually telling of this. Other cues, such as possession of the "sunglasses" (he might not be holding anything at all, only adding to his apparent insanity), or music playing, is also telling of a perspective change.

I shit you not, with this new perspective I believe this jumped to one of my favorite movies of all time. My mind was completely blown. To me, it was as if I watched The Sixth Sense but never saw the ending. Just another ghost story.

You should all watch this movie and try to see it from both perspectives as you're watching. For full effect, watch it while you're high. And also remember that it was marketed as (and most people still look at it this way) simply that: A shitty scifi/action movie.

Then again, maybe I was just really, really stoned.

I was in PCB at the same time, celebrating PCB Spring Break 2002 of course. Did we see each other?

Notable events that occurred that week:

1. Indiana lost to Maryland in the national championship game.
2. I got my ears pierced because some tattoo parlor on Front Beach Road was offering discounts I couldn't say no to. The next day I hated myself and permanently removed the earrings.
3. I ran into a chick I met skiing in northern Michigan, finger-banged her, then passed out while said fingers were still inside her. Never heard from her again.
4. A friend of mine - who you know Blonde, pm me if you're curious - got a bj from a chick - who you also know - and her gum got stuck in his pubes.
5. We stayed the entire week at a Kampground Of America, which ended up costing us less than $25 per person.

Didn't you end up getting beat up by like 3 college kids and spit up blood as you said "fuck you" on the ground?

Holy crap. That is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Thank you.

The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them.
