A new day in Indiana, and a new college coach firing. Can't IU just deal with having a terrible football team? With any luck, Davis will get fired this season too, and you guys can have a whole new set of coaches for next year. The best coach at IU was and always will be Jerry Yeagley.

With all the top tier coaches out there and a new AD willing to spend top dollars on a football coach (something our past 5 AD's have not wanted to do) you can bet we'll be landing a big name.

IU made progress in football the past few years, but its hard for me to see them land a big name coach. IU doesnt have much to work with, Indiana is nearly devoid of football talent, so it would be hard to lure a big name coach. The AD in my opinion is better off trying to find a no-name coach and hopefully he'll blossom into the next Bobby Petrino.

Frank Solich (Nebraska), Ron Zook (Florida), Terry Hoeppner (Miami of Oh.) and Greg Brandon (Bowling Green) are the top four canidates for the job. Zolich and Zook are notable names but it sounds as if Zook is getting the Illinois job offer and people worry about Solich being 60 and not doing much with Nebraska (although they were around 58-19 under him). I'd choose Brandon from bowling green.

I didnt know they were going after those 4 candidates.
Zook is probably teh best of the group, it would huge if IU landed him. Solich wont help your program out, and i would say the other two are largely unproven, they could turn out to be a gem, or just another medicore coach. -Shaw- True, but look at the production of their football team prior to when he took over. Losing 4 in a row is acceptable. |

Losin 4 games in a row is never acceptable when before the first one you were talked about as a national championship contender....Tiller choked, and so did orton....you cant throw the ball 50 times in the big ten and expect to win...you just worry bout paying your tuition to keep paying your players

So, to sum things up, we'll keep going to bowl games and attracting Heisman quality players, and you guys can keep praying for a miracle coaching find and recruiting guys with names longer than anyone at IU can spell.

Hasn't been reported on nubblies and not that anyone cares seeing as you can pretty much fit us IU football fans in a phone booth but IU hired former Miami of Ohio coach Terry Hoeppner. I for one am more excited about IU football than I have in 10 years since our last bowl game (1994).
If anyone has a chance to read some of the articles Hoeppner is originally from Indiana and really seems dedicated moreso than any other coach to building a winning program. I also am excited about the offense he plans to bring in. He likes a big play offense and really loves to put some air under the ball which will cause for some excitement in bloomington. The guy is a proven winner and has had some major talent go through Miami of O.(Rothelisberger) |

BDH, do you really think that this coach can get IU football winning again? There isn't much to work with there. Have you seen the Big 10, it's quite a rough conference if you are Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, or Penn State.

Watch out for Penn State Vol you might be eating that comment.
Yes I do think hoeppner can do it for the only reason that he plays a style of football i think is condusive to make a contender in the Big 10. We all saw what Purdue did running a similar offense and it's proven you can't win the Big10 championship without running the ball. I do think you can win ball games though and that is what is most important at IU. Hoeppner is 57 years old so we are looking at a 7 or 8 year guy here. If he can win some games and establish a little prestige he won't be leaving the cupboard bear when he leaves and we can attract and even better coach for being a mid-tier Big10 team. BDH is right. All this coach has to do is get IU off the bottom of the Big 10 barrel, and produce some winning seasons. By doing this he'll start to draw some more recruits and leave the program sitting pretty for the next guy to come in. I dont think Hoeppner is one to turn IU into a big ten champion, but he can at least maximize the current and improve the overall incoming talent like he did at Miami(OH).
Just to touch on the Penn State topic a little bit more, they just landed the #1 recruit for the '05 class, and already have another #10 recruit, this is huge for them landing other recruits. I honestly feel Joe Pa would leave Penn State if he felt he wouldnt see another good team before he left. Penn State has a great defense already, if they can shape up their offense they have a solid team. |
