On September 20th the St. Louis Cardinals had an 8.5 game lead in the NL Central over the Houston Astros. Fast forward to ten days later and that lead is a mere 0.5 games as we enter the last weekend of play. I realize a lot of you aren't into baseball, but I know most of you are at least into sports. If the Astros wind up winning this division it might be considered the biggest collapse in the history of sports.
The Astros have won nine in a row while the Cardinals have dropped 8 of their last 9. Each of the two teams play three games this weekend (Fri-Sat-Sun). The Astros are on the road against the Braves while the Cardinals are home against the Brewers. The Cardinals have one extra game to play this season; a make-up game against the San Fransisco Giants that will take place on Monday but only if there is just 0.5 games seperating the Astros and Cardinals in the division. (In other words, if one of the teams leads by 1.5 or 2.5 or 3.5, the result of the Cardinals make-up game would be moot, and therefore not played). Scenarios: If the season ends with the Cardinals leading the division by 0.5, they will play the Giants in the make-up game. If they win, they win the division. If they lose, they play the Astros, in Houston (and you can bet I'll be there), for a one-game playoff to determine who wins the division. If the season ends with the Astros leading the division by 0.5, the Cardinals will play the make-up game against the Giants. If they lose, the Astros win the division. If they win, the division will be tied forcing a one-game playoff in Houston. To be honest, I'm hoping that the outcome of this weekend results in a one-game playoff in Houston. That will be one helluva sporting event to attend. The world of baseball, most specifically fans of the Cardinals and Astros enter this weekend with a high degree of anticipation. My personal worry is seeing the Cardinals win the division rendering the Astros move to within 0.5 nothing but a giant cock tease. Ten days ago everyone in this city had written the Astros off. Now the city is electric with anticipation for what might be the greatest division-winning comeback in the history of sports. |

The worse case scenario happened yesterday. The Astros loss while the Cardinals won. Now the Cardinals lead by 1.5 with 2 games left to play. Basically if the Cardinals win out, the division is theirs. If they go 1-1 while the Astros go 2-0, or if they go 0-2 while the Astros go 1-1, revert back to scenarios in original post. If they go 0-2 while the Astros go 2-0, the Astros will end the season up 0.5; revert back to scenarios in original post.
Basically this went from a 40%ish percent shot down to about a 15% shot with yesterday's shortcomings. |

There's life and then there is Cubs baseball, it's a chore to seperate the two.

FUCK! Houston lost. It's over. Neither of the teams in last year's World Series made the playoffs this year.

Rooting for IU Football since the day I was born and enduring 13 straight years of losing seasons (14 after this year) would make one want to sellout too. I still love the Hoosiers as much as I did in 1993 when I was 8 years old.
If you were a true fan, there would be no selling out or questioning why you support the team. You do cause you are a true fan and everybody knows there will be greener pastures next year with Joe Giradi at the helm. (I'm a Cubs Optimist for "Next Year") |

Would be funny as fuck if the cards catch fire now and win the whole thing. Not likely. The 1973 Mets almost did the same thing. They lost in 7 games to Oakland after upsetting Cincy in the playoffs.
