Default Tell us a secret you know because of your work that others might not know

I'll start us off.

When you see positive reviews of books, things like:

"Amazing...Holds the reader's attention." --Publishers Weekly

Or

"King does [an] admirable job with this new thriller." --New York Times Book Review

"Fantastic!" --Dan smith, author of Cry Baby

It is possible these are legit, but just as likely they have been manipulated with brackets or ellipses, or just completely taken out of context. Something could read:

"A fun idea that ultimately fails due to weak characters and poor plotting. For hardcore fans only--everyone else should look for a good mystery elsewhere." --Wen Loo, author of New York Times bestselling author of Tao Healing

Suddenly it becomes:

"A fun idea...For hardcore fans." Not to mention Mr. Loo, though a bestselling author, is also a complete sham who's been exposed but has a loyal following.

Whenever I see review quotes like this, be it for movies or books, I rarely trust them. All companies care about is selling products.

The price of a medicine is marked up significantly when sold as a prescription.

IE. Ibuprofen

Just like... people I know in poker consistently and vastly underestimate how much money the poker portal I help run makes. Basically, I don't think people who don't make money online realize how much money there is to be made online. It's a lot.

I'll try to get more specific for you...

Think of a site like WWTDD.com. It's a good site. You look at it and it's nice. But you probably never think, "I wonder how much money this site makes?" Let me tell you, it's a lot.

First, that site probably gets 5 million visitors daily (that's a ballpark guess, I could be off by a lot, but there's a decent chance it's reasonably close). Each of those visitors is worth money. In the case of this site, not very much. It's a celebrity gossip blog. Their traffic is worth shit. But each visitor is still probably worth half a penny to the site on a daily basis (again, that's a guess and I'm probably underestimating if anything). That's $25,000 in revenue per day. For a bunch of silly celebrity gossip. Now they probably spend a bunch on rights to photos and hosting costs, but nowhere near $25k a day. That site literally profits millions a year. Does this characterize somewhat how the value of websites and Internet traffic is more than people realize?

Educators at University of Phoenix cannot legally be called "professors" or even "teachers". They have to be referred to as "Faculty" or "Instructors". Almost all of the faculty who call into technical support are just about as retarded or neurotic as our students. Granted, there is a biased sample there, but still. It is not a full time job, many do it to supplement FT jobs.

Become a faculty member - University of Phoenix

If it were not for Enrollment Advisors, Finance Advisors, Academic Advisors, and yours truly in Technical Support, I would wager that 80% of our students would not be able to graduate. I don't mean this in the way where normal people like us would go to advisors when we had a problem or legitimately needed Academic advice or how to to take the next step in our education. We usually did this as a one-off and didn't contact them again for a year or two.

I mean these fucking retards literally have to be walked through almost every part of the schooling process, repeatedly. Once again, I probably get a biased sample, so the above figure may not be accurate, but it's pretty bad. I get told on a weekly basis "I literally would not have graduated if it weren't for technical support". These are the worst moments of my life. It feels like i'm a Judas or Benedict Arnold to academia and anything intellectual.

University of Phoenix hands out Bachelors, Masters, and "Doctorates" (un-fucking believable) to so many retards like candy you wouldn't believe it. Don't be surprised if sometime during the next 5+ years some of you have to deal with uppity fucking idiot assholes working the same job at you because they have a "university" degree.

AP predicts UoP as we know it will be gone within 5 years. Some lenders and guarantors are dragging UoP and their ilk into litigation on student loans. In a nut shell, UoP is being accused of using it's financial aid offices into a fundraising machine. There are too many mentally disabled (i.e. IQ of 75 shit) folks wandering around with $250,000 and up in student loans that went directly back into the school's coffers. Other vocational schools have been really accused of targeting the handicapped.

I think it's inevitable. And the key is as we know it. I'm not sure how long it's going to take -so I'll back pedal there. The feds and the state guarantors are pissed at UoP and they're probably going to lose their ability to give GSLs to anyone with a pulse. The governments are pissed that the UoPs are profiting off of GSLs that everybody should have known were going to be defaulted.

The feds are still deciding whether or not to pull the plug on HLC. If the feds kill off HLC, *poof* UoP goes away for a while until SASC or somebody gives them a green light, which they've refused to do. Here's an article about some piss ants getting pissed For-profit colleges under fire over value, accreditation - USATODAY.com. That's really not a big deal. But when the state guarantors and the feds start joining and filing to get their money back, that should throw up major red flags. Especially when they're already openly pissed off at the HLC.

A couple of my other law school/lawyer friends have mentioned the same thing before, actually RE: Government coming at UoP and other such schools for student loan default. I've heard it's on par with the predatory lending from the housing crisis/crash a few years back.

Advisors, particularly Enrollment and Financial, are basically trained in the art of manipulation. They are trained on the emotional needs/concerns of "students" and how to calm them/ramp them up for school. They prey on the insecurities of the students (teen pregnancies, college dropouts, military, etc.) and sell them a fantastic dream of a graduate/an escape from their shitty worlds. Obviously education is a way out of that, but the sad truth is that it really isn't going to help a lot of these people, and it is only further going to saturate the market with "needing a degree", something I think is absolute bullshit and even peddled to middle and upper class kids.
