My knowledge is superior to yours in this arena because my feminine major required me to take several of neuroanatomy/neurophysiology classes and thus, I am a pseudo expert.

My main argument in this debate is that within 25 years, neurological developments will cure blindness.

Are there any challengers to my knowledge???????

I didn't read any of your bullshit rules or anything. But EVERYONE knows that after a certain developmental stage, even if a blindey was implanted with brand spankin' new eyes with 20/20 vision, a brain deprived of visual stimulus wouldn't be able to interpret the electrochemical signals coming from the optic nerve as anything but noise.

You also left the definition of "cured" wide open to interpretation. This thread sucks.

Yes because it's normal practice to purposely deprive people of visual stimuli past the developmental stage. Neuroplasticity relies on stimulating neuronal activity, not suppressing it. In addition, it refers to the rewiring of axon pathways so that signals wouldn't necessarily need to originate from the optic nerve. Synesthesia is already a condition (for lack of a better term) that modern science is familiar with, in which people are able to experience certain senses via other senses. In other words, there are people for example, who experience tastes or sounds when presented with visual stimuli.

I've mentioned on here before that there is at least one case study of someone who was born without the left side of their brain (where the major language areas are) who learned to speak without issue, as well as use the right side of their body (despite it being controlled by the left side of the brain). Is it such a stretch that within 25 years we won't be able to figure out how to stimulate visual neuronal connections to a point where vision no longer relies on direct pathways from the optic nerve to the visual cortex? I submit that it is not.

I don't know where you are trying to go with your first paragraph. Anyone born blind is experiences visual sensory deprivation... it's kind of what it means to be blind. Synesthesia is also completely irrelevant to this topic. It is perceived sensation from unrelated stimuli. Unless you define something like "seeing music" in addition to hearing it being a cure for blindness I don't know why you brought it up.

Now to your second paragraph where you finally start talking about neuroplasticity. There is no debate here that the brain is very plastic during the beginning of life and people can use different areas of the brain to control what is normally controlled somewhere else. The point of this thread was to show off your knowledge of neuroplasticity by arguing that within 25 years we will be able to cure blindness. You haven't even mentioned one thing yet that indicates that we are more close to this ability than we were 100 years ago.

Can you even cite one instance where medical science was able to control the restoration of functionality in a specific part of the brain in replacement of another? Even something simple such as motor control for a pinky, much less something as complicated as vision? I'm not talking about case studies in which the brain was able to restore functionality on its own.
