Check out Elysium. It's supposed to mimic telomere lengthening or some shit which is a component of aging. Seems kind of scammy but there are some interesting studies and testimonies about it.

I never said it was bad, but if we consider the massive amount of unnecessary, processed slaughter of sentient beings, which definitely feel pain, suffering, and emotions, is not entirely necessary on the scale that is currently popular in Western countries. Compare this to countries like India, which sustains a very large population on a mostly vegetarian diet. Meat and Dairy companies have a vested interest in perpetuating mass consumption of meat.

I grew up on a cattle farm; I bonded with animals regularly and sent them off to slaughter. I felt off about it then, and feel off about it now, as I can't really avoid thinking about the being the meat came from whenever I eat it. Paying attention to that association has naturally led to a decreased consumption of meat, and generally have less digestive problems. But I still eat meat a few times a month, which is why I mentioned decreasing for most meat-eating Americans. It certainly couldn't hurt.

All this being said, I acknowledge that our shift to become omnivores started back when we were ape-like beings that were opportunistic eaters, and ate insects and grubs, so. It was on natural that as our ancestors migrated away from the stable crescent of Africa, into colder regions, the opportunistic eating trend is probably the only thing that allowed our ancestors to survive long periods of freezing cold. That being said, our evolutionary line has also been supported by cannibalism and rape, as a necessity, no doubt, so that's the other side of the coin.

There are too many confounding variables to be confident that the higher IQ scores and longer lifespans of Western vegetarians demonstrate the superiority of an optimal vegetarian diet. Not least, better educated and higher IQ young people are more likely to become vegetarian in the first instance. But what such statistics do suggest is that any alleged benefits of a meat-based diet, if they exist at all, must be exceedingly subtle. For sure, strict vegetarians should ensure a supplementary source of Vitamin B12. Veganism calls for (very) mild inconvenience, not heroic self-sacrifice. Either way, too many discussions of the merits and demerits of different diets are conducted exclusively at he level of personal self-interest. If a cannibal were to wax lyrical on how his victims yielded a useful source of protein, he'd no doubt be correct; but ethically, he'd be missing the point.

I appreciate the link, DH. Looks like it's mostly articles that say what's in the pill but are very, very careful to not specifically say that it does anything at all, though. In fact, the articles in the reputable publications look an awful lot like the kind one could purchase on blackhatworld.com for $1k-$2k each. Not at all saying it's definitely hogshit or anything, just saying that I don't really trust articles like that which only seem to be prominently displayed on the site that's selling the product.

I'd much prefer testaments from folks that have taken the pill for awhile (I realize it's new) and/or studies based on them. Is this something you're taking? If so, I'll take a look at you in a year or so and, if you've Benjamin Button'd or turned superhuman, I'll jump in head first.

We are actually interested in telomeres in a different way from that. So, it’s well understood that telomeres get shorter when cells divide, but not many of our cells actually do divide all that much.

A lot of our cells are simply incapable of division, because of the specialization they have adopted, like neurons, for example, and so a lot of our cells are capable of division, but they only actually divide very occasionally, when they’re called upon to do so, because of some kind of injury.

There are only a very small number of our cells which divide regularly throughout life, and frequently throughout life. So it’s actually not clear that the problem of shortening of telomeres really matters all that much in most aspects of human aging. However, what we can say is that the lengthening of telomeres is itself a problem, in one major effect of age-related disease, namely cancer.

So our approach is actually to do the opposite of what many people are trying. We want to suppress telomere elongation, we want to make it impossible for cells to extend out their telomeres and in doing so, to actually prevent cancers—not from starting, not from initiating, but from getting out of control.

We know that there are some cells in the body that will suffer if we completely eliminate the ability of the body to extend its telomeres. But we think that we can solve that problem using stem cell therapy.

I listened to part of that Sam Harris / Will Mcmadskills podcast yesterday, listening to the rest today.

First thoughts --- this is the first time the concept of Ethical Altruism has been spelled out. This guy is a good communicator. I like that they are putting a more discerning eye on "feel good projects" that white people /The West love to engage in in poor countries.

I feel like it's good it's getting a firm hold in, but it may be a while before most Americans, in particular, embrace the idea of "merely" giving away their "hard-earned" money.

I'm obviously in support of this, if for nothing else, that it gears people towards helping others for happiness, instead of their own trivial, private, rather meaningless personal conquests. That being said, it's still very cutthroat and selfish here in the USA -- the wealthy really keep money in their families here, closing themselves off into minor partitions of "us" vs. "them", so it may be difficult to get them to willingly donate on the concept of altruism alone.
