Yes. Metric, long, perhaps there are more. But "ton" is synonymous with one amount of pounds in this part of the world.

I had a guess, but was wrong. I still have yet to be convinced that I should care or told who outside of truck drivers and people who move exploding whale carcasses around Taiwan need to know.

By that logic, if one does not need to know something than he wouldn't know it. Surely even a man so dull as to not know how many pounds are in a ton can see the error in that line of reasoning.

It's one of those things like how to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius or the quadratic formula (opposite of b, plus or minus the square root of something over something else)...I knew it for a test, then didn't give a fuck. I'm sure it's up there in the mess of my mind somewhere, but it's just not something that I use...ever, so it's not on hand.

The quadratic formula doesn't occasionally show itself in daily life, though. Clearly, the weight of a ton does...or we would have never had the conversation in the first place.
