My family put down my dog today. His name was Milo and I don't think I can ever be so attached to a dog again.

I wrote this to a friend back in July:

When I was home he fell off some stairs and hurt his foot really badly and couldn't put any weight on it, but he still insisted on hobbling around. He wont stay in any one place and if my mother leaves for another room he'd hobble there and show no sign of pain or fear or laziness. He's 14 or 15 - practically deaf and nearly blind. He has a giant tumour on his stomach and he's all grey now. He can't go up or down steps anymore. But none of that matters because he's still the alpha dog. He'll growl at you if you pick him up to help him up the stairs. He puts the other dogs in their place when they try to eat before him. And he looks out for his family - when anybody makes what he thinks is a threatening gesture to a member of our family (especially my mother) he goes into attack mode. He's fiercely proud and independent, old as Moses, fearless, and unable to feel pain. He's going to live forever and I admire him.

I was wrong about him living forever - I didn't take into account my murderous parents putting him down.

I didn't think I'd get worked up over this damn dog, but I really did. I loved the beast and he will be greatly missed.

In Milo's honor I'll post a pic of what he probably looked like as a puppy, I don't have any of him off-hand:

My parents are murderers as well. They killed my dog and didn't even bother telling me about it. I came home for Christmas and Princess Jasmine was just gone.

My parents are also murderous bastards. My dog was about 12 and had bladder cancer. Aside from being unable to hold the piss in her bladder for very long at all, thus causing her to piss inside on the floor a lot, she was doing alright. Other than being blind in one eye she was in fairly good health considering she was dying of cancer. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of putting her down since I did not feel like she was in much pain at the time. I even told my parents I would take her until she got real bad so she wasn't pissing on their floor. One day I called home for some reason and was told that Millie had been put down. I was furious about this. Mainly because I told them if they were going to kill her that I wanted to be there and I wanted to say goodbye to her. They honored neither of my requests.

I feel your pain, and you have my condolences.

Since we're sharing stories...I grew up with a golden retriever who was the best goddamn dog in the world. Well, he was getting up there in age, but nothing was really wrong with him. Then one day my dad tells me a drunk shot him in cold fucking blood. Murdered my best friend.
