I used to carry constantly for years. But it got to be too much of a hassle even for the small gun I carried (this:Kel Tec CNC). Problem with most hand guns is that they're not the most accurate things even at relatively short-medium distances. Night time in dark areas small handguns aren't effective outside distances that aren't really close. It's a bitch trying to hit something moving in the dark with a handgun. You start getting into luck playing a role more than skill.

As for the gun control issue; I'd say that yea, gun laws make this easier, but it's such a rare happening and small percentage of total death, that it's just something you risk as a free society.

And how you set limits on how much/how powerful is acceptable?

How much do clips cost? I can understand the want for a bulk ammo stock, lower price per shot, availability and so on. But the only reason I can see for mass amounts of clips/fast reload are the front page reasons, and maybe zombie invasion.
Could they be regulated? Most ammo of this sort is bought in the clip, right?

UK isn't the US, much easier to regulate things on an island, we don't have a mexican border, let alone a canadian one, I don't think that much can or should be adopted in the US.
It's been 44 years since the shotgun was banned, but provided you don't have a criminal record and go to a shooting club for 6 months or so you'll be able to get a license.
Handguns were banned in 1997 and although a committed gangster will be able to get one, most people would probably find it hard. Does this make gun crime harder to commit? of course.
Eh the question was curtailing murder, murderers gonna murder I think, although they'd have to be more creative to get the kill counts you can get in the US.

Edit : Honestly I think the reason we don't shoot each other is because we are more civilized, and why are we more civilized?
