Why do composers think that just adding a slow moving cello with massive vibrato makes something awesome? That piano part sounds like some nonsense I've written because I can't play piano and was trying to play something that sounded cool to coverup my lack of skill.

You can get all sassy with me, but I asked because piano solo with cello background is not a musical genre. In fact, piano with just strings is rare. The piano is such a powerful instrument, that composers use the entire pallet of colors provided by the full orchestra to accompany it. A good introductory tune for piano solo with orchestra would be a theme and variations composition, so that one can hear the original theme and see how the composer manipulates it in an absurd number of ways.
The original is Caprice No. 24 by Niccolo Paganini, published in 1819. It inspired an amazing number of settings and arrangements, with the most notable being by Sergei Rachmaninoff titled Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. This version is much longer and has 24 variations, compared to the original 11. This is with the composer playing piano. Lastly, my original exposure to the piece was in a setting by James Barnes for wind band titled Fantasy Variations on a Theme by Niccolo Paganini. The composer takes advantage of all the different colors (combinations of sound) in the wind band and showcases them brilliantly. This performance is done by the Hawaii All State Band from last year. |
