For the record, I have never once thought BDH is an asshole IRL. He's always been a nice guy willing to hang out with anyone while not judging anyone. A rare breed for sure for Warsaw.

BDH and I talked a lot of shit on nubblies for several months leading up to a nubblies gathering. I wasn't sure what would happen when we met up at Gaz's place. I was upstairs and he walked in and instantly asked where I was. He came upstairs and I was ready for anything and he laughingly shook my hand and everything was cool. It actually changed how I approach awkward situations to this day.

I think the real distinction that needs to be made is in regard to the word the word "offensive". Most nonreligious people that I know rarely get truly offended; it's usually the religious who use this term. The only time nonbelievers ever use it is to combat the religious on their own ground.

If we have to use the word "offensive", let's put it into context:

The religious get emotionally upset when something offends their particular view of a religion.

The non-religious get "offended" when religion intellectually insults the relatively universal concepts of common sense, rationality, and separation of church and state.

Regardless, your proposal is weak overall. Religion has been pushed on people for milennia, when a lot of people have just wanted to be freed of it. Religious status messages are a form of oppression, nonreligious ones are a form of freedom. You can bitch about it when you're a minority.

The better one is simply "I am not offensive because I am right", it's just we are conditioned to dance around that.

I don't see "we're the minority, therefore we can do things you can't" as all that valid.

A status message cannot be oppressive or an act of freedom based on it's source; shit, it can't be period.

You could put a religious message up that involves no jewish zombie or towel head pedo stuff, and I would struggle to find that oppressive in the least; let alone offensive.

I do agree with the fact that, say, a Dawkins status will have idiot religious types butt-hurt much more than the other way around. I just think that minority/oppressed has no more or less inherent value to it.

I recall discussing the issue of bible studies at school in my law class. The consensus was that it could occur, as long as it was not run by a school employee (sponsor), yet one had to be in its presence. If no employee would be present, it could not exist, as it was being done on school grounds. Similar situation with churches have services at a school.

This reminds me of my first Nubblies gathering; ID was there regaling UB, Gaz, and Toungina with tales of my remarkable badassery before my arrival.

I thought that somebody might try to get me angry just to be funny, so I was prepared for that.

In reality, UB was planning on just giving me the could shoulder, not shaking hands, and just generally being a prick, but was just too goddamn nice of a person to do it, so he just told me what he had planned and drunkenly giggled, then we all got stupid drunk.
