Why don't they just have a bloody four or eight team tournament for the national championship. They can still assign the big bowl games to be part of the tourney or something... it just seems ridiculous.

Because what this does, and what a bowl system does, is make EVERY game important. How exciting is it to watch a regular season game in the NBA, College Basketball, or even the NFL, if you fuck up once you're basically screwed over in the system, and dont have a shot.

Going to a tournament would also kill the players, having the top 8 teams duke it out over 3 week weeks would have more casualities than a Candadian invasion of the US.

This period is also when most of the recruiting is done. If you have a playoff then it will also drag on into this time period and making it hell for coaches to both prepare for the next weeks game and to recruit highschool athletes.

It doesn't seem like two extra weeks is going to kill anyone. But you are right, there would be a lot of casualities if the Canadiens tried to invade.

I saw the Oklahoma coach on espn, and he said he would gladly except a challenge to have the an extra national championship game between USC (pending they win) and the Sugar Bowl winner. Now that I would like to see...

I thought about it some more.

"They don't have time" really doesn't work. DII and DIII has tournaments, and they're fine? Also, if it's that big of a deal, just cut some of the preseason games, or don't have such a gap before the bowl games.

Cut preason games to make room for a tourney wouldnt make much sense. One of things that they want to preserve about college football is that every game matters, if you slip up, fuck up once, its much harder to make it in the championship game. They dont want teams to be able to afford loses, teams need to play each game like its their last if they want a crystal footballl

Also the time consideration could work, if you are going to ask a coaching staff to both recruit football players, and prepare for a very tough opponent, its not going to be something they are willing to tackle. What will result is that the teams that do make it into the tourney are punished because the teams who didnt make it now have a recruiting advantage.

I think they only way they should have a tournament is if they have a tie at the end of the season, which very well could happen now. The two teams that are tied, square off and the winner takes all. It still keep the integrity of the regular season intact, and allows the BCS to stay in place rather than bitch about getting a new system.

You're telling me they couldn't cut one preseason game, and start the tourney one week earlier, thus ending at the same time as normal? That is completely possible. It's about a one game difference. Some teams already play one more game than others anyway. Regardless, I may not be a football genius, but it seems ridiculous that one extra week of football throws off the entire recruiting schedule? In a 52 week year?

No because not every team has a preaseason game, or plays the same number of games. Seasons range from 11-14, or even 15 game seasons. Also they dont finish up at the same time, for example Big Ten Teams got done the 22nd of november, while the Pac Ten, Big 12, and SEC got done Dec 6th. Next, the first bowl game is the 16th, and the last one is January 4th, which is nice and spread out. Bowl games are spread out so that the majority of them can be watched, throwing in a tournament would cause bowl games to overlap, smaller bowls would die out due to lack of attention, and sure enough, we have a bowl monopoly.

You are asking for all teams to cut a non-conference opponent which they wouldnt traditionally play each season, and move up their schedule entirely one week. Fat Chance. For starters take the Michigan vs OSU game, it has been played the same weekend for the past 60 years, this goes the same for numerous other rivarilies, for them to get moved up a week to make room for a tournament is highly unlikely. You are asking to kill a part of tradition, something which seperates college football from any other sport. Secondly, preseason games such as the pigskin classic which starts about 2 weeks prior to the official start of the season, under your idea would have to get cut, once again killing tradition.

Now lets examine the recruiting schedule.

March-Aug, you cant recruit anyone unless they are a standout junior, because simply you dont know how they will do, the only thing you do during this time, is index possible recruits based on their junior year preformance.

Aug-end of Novemeber- Recruiters take note of possibilites and send letters, call them etc etc, but visits are rare because athletes cant leave while in season generally. Especially to out of state colleges.

December-1st or 2nd weekend in January- Recruits come to your school either the first of weekend after your season finishes up, or the weekend after your bowl game is over, or both. The time in between is used for preparing your team for the game, and still making phone calls trying to get recruits who've already visited to commit, or ones that havent to come and visit.

2nd weekend-early February- Recruits commit to schools, and have to do so by February, which is when signing day is.

So lets review, cutting a game isnt a possiblity, along with moving up the schedule due to tradition. Adding a tournament puts a clamp on recruiting efforts, as coaches focus on preparing for games. The tournament, would also overlap lesser bowl games, and thus making these bowl games less, and less likely to stay afloat.

The bowl games would still be spread out, you're just spreading out the bigger bowl games, giving better ratings to those games. The people who were going to watch the lesser bowls still will, but you would also be getter better ratings for the big ones.

So don't move the games up a weekend. You still have plenty of time.

As far as recruiting. I think that kid in Smalltown, USA won't mind waiting around an extra week before UCS comes to visit him because they were do busy being crowned national champions. The recruiting schedule you gave wouldn't be destroyed by 8 teams playing a tournament.
