There is nothing addictive in alcohol. People can control it, if they wish. Most just don't want to and like to blame a "disease" (which is as ludicrous) because saps fall for it. To me, it's groups like AA that feed off of idiots who would rather play dumb and helpless than take control of their lives. It's easier to be ignorant and claim you're a victim than admit you have a problem that you aren't strong enough to control. This is just like the guy I cited in the "only in religion" thread who is using religion as a cop-out for his lack of taking responsibility in his own life and to just stop smoking weed on his own.

Very true BDH. True alcoholics can't function without alcohol... we call this dependency or addiction. There's a major difference between being a lush and being an actual alcoholic as well, but alcoholism is a VERY real thing.

Alcoholics use alcohol to cope with stress. They become psychologically dependent on alcohol. Their psychological dependence can manifest itself physically during withdrawal.

It can be prevented or corrected by a measure of control. There are those that cannot do it themselves and need help. If you need help, get it. Nothing wrong with that.

Alcohol would fit your description then; you can have severe seizures or even die from alcohol withdrawal. It's not hard to argue alcohol is the most serious physical dependency, barbiturate withdrawal can be deadly to, and Benzo withdrawl can cause seizures, but a full fledged heroin addict might wish he was dead, but he won't actually die from withdrawal, the full fledged alcoholic might; they will almost certainly go through terrible physical symptoms.

You really have a poor understanding of basic medicine.

There is nothing in alcohol, alcohol is alcohol. Alcohol is physically addictive, so if alcohol isn't addictive, by your incredibly misguided standards, nothing is. So even if you discount all the mental aspects, it undeniably forms a tolerance and physical addiction and goes into physical withdrawal if the person stops drinking. So if you really are ready to throw out all the non physical aspects, that means there is no such thing as a coke addict, or a meth addict, which is a hard argument to make.

Even though, as I said, alcohol withdrawal can fucking kill you.

So really, do you think that anything is addictive, or that anything is a drug? Are these just made up words?
