Dealerships will give you whatever number you want on your trade, and hit you in another way, the price. It's common practice to "over" allow on a trade 2 grand, and raise the price 3500 bucks. When customers ask us what we will give them for their trade, and you give them a number that perks up their ears, they don't give a shit about price.


Example: Yesterday, customer wants 15000 for his trade. I say sure, we can do that, knowing that his trade was worth 13000. The price of the Lincoln Navi he was wanting was 24500. The price then turned to 28500. He talked me down to 27600. I would put on the ACV which is the actual value of the vehicle, I would put 13000, but I covered it with the raise in price and still knocked out a 6 g deal!

Did he not see the sticker price before proceeding with his trade? In other words, did you raise the price to $28500 before he even knew what the sticker price was?

Correct. We are taught to stay off price until you know the ins and outs of the deal. Always find out if they have money down, trade, and around about credit score before giving price. Things like bank fees can kill any gross if someones score is low. That's why, anytime you shop for a car, you always should either have your own financing before stepping on the lot, or at the very least, tell them that. If they know you are going through a different bank, other then theirs, they have to play by the book.

Correct. The only places we have prices are when we market in magazines. We normally don't work with high mark ups on our cars. To make profit, we try and get the whole story, and from there is where we make our money. I never actually go through the process much anymore. I've made my nitche by being up front and honest. I haven't sold as many cars lately though, so I have to make a decent profit if I'm only selling 2 or 3 cars a week.
