The general consensus is yes... chess is a sport.
While I don't play halo (I could never pick up how to move and view with a controller as opposed to mouse and keyboard), a lot of people I know do. And they take it more seriously than just about anything, even their schoolwork. [ April 08, 2004, 08:13 PM: Message edited by: DJ FC ] |

Psychedelics are illegal not because a loving government is concerned that you may jump out of a third story window. Psychedelics are illegal because they dissolve opinion structures and culturally laid down models of behavior and information processing.

Do you consider Bobsleading a sport? I'm sure they sweat when they train, but during a competition i highly doubt they sweat.
I believe a sport is anything that a good portion (more than just half) of participants are extremely competitive or winning or losing could be a matter of pride. If you think about this definition (I have not consulted a dictionary, I'm talking about the connotations of the word 'sport' not its literal meaning), it fits pretty precisely things we would expect to be a sport, and things we wouldnt. For example: Checkers is not a sport, most players are not extremely competitive or take it as a matter of pride. Checkers is a game. Eucher is a sport. Chess is a sport. Halo is a sport. While these things aren't athletics, they are still on the same level as athletics when it comes to competition. [ April 08, 2004, 11:36 PM: Message edited by: DJ FC ] |

Poor Sport

You've gotta be shitting me FC.
Eucher is not a sport, Chess is not a sport, Halo is not a sport. Im not trying to tear down these activities, but they aren't sports. Anything that is even up for consideration of being a sport should involve physical activity. |

Pliedes, when someone asks someone if they play any sports, how many people do you know who say "yeah, i've been in band for 3 years...1st chair, baby"

I don't think playing in a band is a sport, unless its Norma Jean or Seraphim (sp). I think anything other than video games, board games, and musical things are sports. Just because society has not accepted them as sports.

I'm just saying that cheerleaders usually justify their "sport" by saying that it's extremely physical, they have practices, they have their own competitions, etc... well all those same things occur when one plays in a band. I was just pointing out the similarities. Quote:
b) I hardly think the homoerotic festivities of the latter band qualifies as a sport. | ||
