Yes, i know this topic is dead, but I can't help but laugh at where stanky says that combat needs to be more open minded....

You know, when I first read that, I didn't pay much mind to it, but in looking at it now...yeah, it does make me chuckle.

Oh, and StDx, not being a prick here, but the Descendents aren't emo. They are punk through and through.

you can label anything whatever you want... fact of the matter is emo is simply emotionally charged punk... if you listen to descendents at all, you see that. sorry if they're not you're crying on stage whiny shit, but they are still emo in my book. the fact that they aren't the whiny type of emo that is so fucking popular today is what makes them the good emo band.

try these tracks:
hope
jean is dead
good good things
she's my ex
myage
silly girl
sour grapes
ride the wild
catalina

there are many more I can't think of right now and some of these titles might be All, but still check them out and see if it changes your mind.

Nah, I'm a big fan of the Descendents....I've heard most of those tracks.

But if you classify emo as anything emotionally driven, then you've just classified almost every single style of music.

To tell you the truth, I pretty much hate the label of "emo", just for the fact that most music out there is 'emotional'.

So yeah, you could classify Descendents into an emo category.

Whatever. It all goes back to my first post on this thread, as you can't really ask everybody to like your style of music, so just learn to be tolerant.

ok, obviously everyone in this forum is in high school because just about every band mentioned on this discussion is complete shit. for everyone who says that punk is shit, to you i say, you have no idea what you are talking about and obviously have no musical knowledge whatsoever. bands like the mc5, the stooges, television, ny dolls, and the ramones revolutionized music in the 70s and bands like sonic youth and fugazi made some of the best music of the 80s. and the new york punk movement was probably the most important thing to happen in the history of music. and to everyone who thinks that blink 182 and dashboard confessional is punk music needs to get their head out of their ass. there is nothing different between any of those bubble gum groups and britney spears. if someone wants to hear what real punk music sounds like get a stooges album. and if you want to hear a good band today making punk music, check out the liars.

I've heard of a few of those bands, such as television, The Stooges, and of course, The Ramones. I've also mentioned Fugazi in my previous posts.

What I think many people are thinking of when they mention "punk" is the stuff like New Found Glory, and The Ataris. Which I find to be catchy at first, but damn, I can't listen to their whole fucking albums, cause every song sounds the same.

Music classification hurts my brain. That's why I hate it.

i agree combat chuck. i used to be one of those people who hated punk music, but it was mostly because i didn't know the history behind it and also because punk to me was all that bubble gum stuff that people try to pass off as punk today. i don't want to get into the argument about what is punk and what isn't because that's a whole different story. i really don't even listen to punk music that much. right now i'm really into bands like my bloody valentine that i guess could sort of be considered punk...but whatever...it just bothers me sometimes when people say that punk music is crap because i don't really think they really know what they are saying.

sonic youth- shitty garage band... always have been and alway will be. never punk, grunge at best.
new york dolls?!- what the fuck, decent music but they still were the marilyn manson of the day
television- can't argue, much better than most the shit coming from ny at the time
the liars???- wannabe clash... if you want the best new york punk band listen to bad brains... leave your shitty strokes, the vines, yeah yeah yeahs, white stripes shit at the door.

black flag and misfits suck??? you got to get your shit straight. you can say what you want, but I've probably been around a lot longer than you have and I have yet to meet anyone who can deny the power and influence these two bands have had on the punk scene as a whole. maybe you don't like them, and that's your perogative, but they sure as hell did a lot more for music than televion, ny dolls, and the stooges. sure, the ramones and the mc5 made the shit easier for the masses to take, but how can you talk shit about black flag??? they ARE punk. the stooges kick serious ass, especially before iggy left... too bad mr.pop is now a commercial entity selling himself to anyone that waves a dollar his way. but good try though, it's good to see that someone can watch an episode of behind the music and think that they know what's going on.

"Oh, I listen to a lot of popular music. There's some Britney Spears songs I like. It's just about finding like something about it that you like. And not sort of discarding it because it's popular music. I think that's wrong."
-Angus Andrew, lead singer of the Clash... ummm... I mean the Liars

billybobthorton:
The New York Punk movement as one of the most important events in music history?
I must say, that's so stupid that it's absolutely hilarious. For one thing, music has been evolving and changing for a long, long time, and something that has only occured in the past 30 years or so can hardly be classified so historically. Besides, there have been many more important events in the past few decades than the New York punk movement. I'd rant, but the Gator Bowl just started, so to summarize: You are fucking ignorant.

Since I haven't heard anything by you guys about Fugazi, what do people here think of them? Sorry to get this off the topic that it's on right now, just wanted to know.

you're right stabmaster. i don't really think that black flag and the misfits suck, i just don't really like them. this is shit talking central right? and you don't like sonic youth...you probably can't believe that i don't like black flag, and i can't believe that you don't like sonic youth...but just a matter of taste i guess.

some other bands you mentioned: the vines -- have to agree, i don't like them either. same thing for the yeah yeah yeahs. but the strokes and the white stripes -- i can dig them...but whatever. what does everyone else think about those guys? i don't care if they're punk or not...both of those bands basically make pop music...but i think it's good.

so you don't like the liars either? if you haven't listened to their most recent album, you should really check it out...

and what's wrong with what angus said? i personally don't like britney spears...but i don't just discard something because it's popular music (white stripes, strokes); i think he's got a good point.

i did say that the ny punk scene was ONE of the most important events in music history...any rock and roll that has come after that has pretty much been influenced by one of those bands. maybe i should refraise that one...one of the most important in the history of rock and roll...i mean come on...the velvet underground...the ramones...you can't really disagree with that can you?

since it seems like the people down this far into the post actually do care about music maybe we should broaden the discussion a little bit beyond punk...

I like a few White Stripes songs....but sometimes it's just too much of a raw type of music for me.

Now, the Strokes...damn, I love them. Even if they've just cloned the Velvet Underground...

just read all the posts
i must agree that matt freeman is by far the best bassest in my opinion download Rancid - maxwell murder
if you want to hear some amazing bass (and yes even in a punk song)

there have been many good arguements about a lot of things on here

i personaly like punk but it is not the only type of music i leasin to i like many more styles

to categorize any style of music by the popy shit you hear on the radio is wrong if you ask me

know one really into punk is going to say nelly is the definition of rap or say new found glory is the definition of punk or creed is the definition of rock there not

i agree that pop punk shit does suck but punk has much better sound then that shit and alot of history that has been stated in posts before this

what i would like to know is if you are trying to explan what "punk" is to you what bands should someone who has never herd of punk download
maybe i will hear of i band i have never herd of and like them soo fare i have herd of all the bands stated

soo let me know your top 5 "punk" bands are
