I can't speak for others but before I came to know Christ my whole life deep down I felt like I was searching. No matter what I did, what temporary happiness I put in my life I constantly was searching. Once I knew Christ my emptiness deep down was gone and I know longer needed to search because I found what I was looking for. It was the most overwhelming peace I'd ever felt in my life. To this date no matter how many times I stumble I get up stronger and become more at peace in life and in my relationship with Christ.
In reading a lot of your posts (specficially blondes) I feel like you all are still searching. Blondes constant search for scientific answers is impressive but it will only lead to more searching. I no longer need to search because I found what it is I was looking for. Blast away boys ![]() |

It's a good thing most people don't think like you. Otherwise we'd still be drilling holes in peoples heads to "let out the evil spirits."

As lovely as it is for you to tell us how empty all our lives are, I think you've got Mr. Blonde all wrong. I could also be wrong, but I don't think he is searching for "scientific answers" to gain fulfillment. He searches for those "scientific answers" because doing so is fulfilling for him.
Edit: Dunno if my post was a bit convoluted, but essentially what I meant was that the answers to scientific questions might provide some fulfillment, but it is the search itself that seems to be more fulfilling. |

I'm not doubting that for some people who aren't 'blessed' with inner drive to find real answers to questions (don't be mad, I wasn't 'blessed' with faith), this is emotionally fulfilling. But I personally don't feel I could ever suspend my truthful skepticism in for a false sense of fulfillment. I've said it once and so have many others, it really is a perfect analogy to The Matrix. Once you take the red pill, there's no going back. Yes, it's harder -- a lot harder. It makes everything more difficult, but it's the trade off one gets for insisting on living in the real, actual world and dealing with the harshness of it uninhibited by a cloud of faith and mythology. Sidenote: I wonder if BDH PM'd DH about this issue offering spiritual comfort. If not, good on him for not taking advantage of an emotional opportunity to proselytize.

BDH did not PM me. Well he did, but it was just a picture of his penis. Besides, there are very few people other than myself that have the ability to sway my personal beliefs in another direction. I am very stubborn.
Life without faith is bleak. There is little to be hopeful about, to be happy about. Sometimes in life being happy is more important than being right. edited b/c I suck as a poster |

If I have no faith, and by this I assume we are talking about a belief in a god that has some sort of control over the world and a belief in some sort of afterlife, I am free. I can have the same hopes as anybody else, but my hopes are focused more to hopes based in the natural world (as in not supernatural), I can hope the world becomes a better place, hope for things in the world, etc. If I believe in some sort of outside control, my hope is placed in the hands of something totally beyond control and logic, this one severely limits my hopes for myself, as I have to hope for this outside force that I have no control over to take care of things. My hopes also generally focused on life, rather than some sort of afterlife. I can't just be miserable here in my actual life and say "well it's ok, I will be rewarded for all eternity in the afterlife." That isn't really hope, it is desperation, a coping mechanism that can develop so strongly that I give up hoping for a better life and just just put all my hope into the afterlife basket. I can certainly be happy, I don't see any argument on this one. As for being happy being more important than being right, in a vacuum I think that might be true, if you have to choose between the two. However, happiness and being right are not mutually exclusive. Not only are happiness and being correct compatible, if you are happy and correct, that happiness is going to come through more strongly, since it isn't based on being wrong. If your happiness is not based on truth, then while the physical and mental affects of happiness are going to be the same, on some sort of philosophical level you will probably know in the back of your head that you are just pretending, or you may be constantly nagged by the your mind not being sure that you are correct. Now, if you don't base your happiness on faith, you are not assured on being correct either, but when you learn any new sort information that shows you were incorrect on something, your world view is ok with that and you can simply take in that new information without it really changing the foundation of you belief, you just learn something new. I hate to sound like I am being antagonistic towards you or other religious people; but I simply am saying that it is a myth that not having faith prevents you from being hopeful, happy, ethical, or anything along those lines. In fact, I find it incredibly freeing to not have to base my life and happiness, etc, on something or someone else.

You made some excellent points, as usual Beebs. I guess, because I'm a self-centered person, that I was in reference to myself. I have lived a long time without faith, and I haven't found happiness. I have found hatred and anger. I used to feel that anger gave me strength, but it made me weak. It gave me fear and misery. And I know these are simply personality flaws of my own, and it has absolutely nothing to do with God or faith, absolutely nothing. But I felt something and I haven't felt much else but hate and anger for a long time. It was peace. Whatever it was, it was powerful, and I want to harness that power to be more than what I am now. If it was God, then I want to find him. If it was just some inner strength of my own that I didn't know was there, I am fine with that as well. I do not see with "eyes of faith", and I am not walking hand-in-hand with Jesus. I am simply far more open to the possibility of a benevolent higher power. I am not a Christian, if anything, I went from being an atheist to an agnostic-I just don't know anymore. But I want to know, and I am going to continue searching for something. If I find it, great, if not, oh well. Whatever it was, it has made me take a good hard look at myself and strive to be better than I am now. I'm very confused, and I don't even know how to talk about this anymore without sounding emotional, which is not my intent. I have worked hard for a long time to devoid myself of all emotional response save hatred and anger. Unfortunately that led to the surfacing of another emotion, misery.
I don't think I'm going to talk about this anymore, because it's hard to without sounding emotional, which is not my intent. I'm a bit confused and I don't really even know how to explain what it is I'm feeling. I'm just going through some shitty times and I'm trying to find more than what I have now. I'm trying to be as rational about this as I can. I will not blindly follow something. If there is a God, then he'll understand that. I am going to continue searching for something, be it within myself or in God, to become a better, happier person. |

I've been doing a lot of thinking about God over the past few days. I have yet to come to a definite conclusion as to his existence, but, if he does exist, I do not believe that such a place as hell exists. I kind of came to the same conclusions that the guy in the above video came to, but used slightly different reasoning. I did not consider the omniscience of God so much as I considered the issue of omnibenevolence. If this God is all good, all loving, then it would be impossible for him to damn anyone to hell for all eternity. I take my father, for example, who loves me more than anyone on this Earth loves me. There is absolutely nothing that I could ever do that would make him hate me. Even if I did something that was so horrible, that it did in fact make him hate me, there is still no way that he could ever damn me to an eternity of pure, unimaginable misery and torture. So if this God loves me more than my own father could ever even comprehend of loving me, how could he damn me to hell for eternity? I just don't think he could. Therefore, if a benevolent God does exist, there is no such thing as hell.

When I was five, I had an emotional attachment to this blue pillow the old neighbor lady made for me. I loved that blue pillow and slept with it every night. One day, I came home from kindergarten and found that the blue pillow was no longer on my bed. "What happened?" I asked my Mom. She informed me that the pillow was getting old and dingy and so she threw it away. I bottled up my emotions about this. I didn't betray to my Mom that I was upset about the pillow having been thrown away, but in actuality, I was devastated. For several days, I was deeply depressed and sad. Then, I got a brilliant idea. "I'll talk to the pillow at night before I go to bed." So each night for probably 6-12 months until I finally got over the pillow, I would call the pillow up in heaven and talk to it. I mean, I did this all in my head. No verbal words were actually spoken. But in my head, I was actually talking to my blue pillow every night. It brought me an immense amount of comfort. I went from devastated to my core that the pillow had been thrown away to completely content and well-adjusted about the whole thing all because I had developed a mechanism for coping having had the pillow taken away from me.
I share this story because as I've gotten older I've been able to realize what I did and why I did it and actually harbor a fair amount of fascination about the whole thing. People come up with some amazing ways to cope with loss, disappointment, etc. For me, it was pretending I could talk to my pillow. For BDH, it's pretending he can talk to the creator of the universe. But the end result is the same in all cases: suspending reality in exchange for temporary comfort. But at the end of the day, my pillow is still in the trash, you guys' girlfriends really did leave you, etc, etc. You can take it on the chin and become hard and cold like assholes such as Blonde, Beebs, and I, or you can employ a child-like coping mechanism and be a delightfully dumb bastard that thinks God made the Earth 10,000 years ago. Either way, we'll all be dead in 60-80 years. |

It's all relative, right? Me losing my pillow when I was 5 would be as devastating to me as losing my girlfriend when I'm 26, etc. The main theme is the same: losing something that you were emotionally attached to and then trying to find a way to deal with that loss.

I guess I hadn't really applied the term but have come to the existential conclusion on my own. After thinking about life long and hard enough, it basically (at least for me) comes down to the choice of either killing yourself or making the best of the time you have here; assigning life your own purpose, not letting others do it for you.

True, pure, unfiltered happiness has come from beginning to know my Creator and my heavenly father. There has been no earthly experience that has ever brought the pure joy that knowing Christ has. There has been moments when the Holy Spirit has been so overwhelming that I can't even use words powerful enoughto explain those moments. Moments where there is no explanation, no questions, and no doubt about truth. If this makes me crazy in your eyes I have zero control over that, but it's moments like this that leave little wiggle room to question my belief in God.

I find it impossible to believe that you can't get that same kind of overwhelming happiness without God. I get that feeling in nature, when surrounded by vast landscapes where I can scream at the top of my lungs without being heard. All I'm saying is what has already been said by everyone else, and that's "It is what YOU make it."
